How to Develop Instructional Frameworks to Support Teacher Growth
By Heather Bell-Williams and Justin Baeder
School improvement often stalls because expectations aren't specific enough to act on. Phrases like "implement with fidelity" and "increase rigor" don't tell a teacher what to do differently tomorrow.
Mapping Professional Practice gives leaders a process for writing instructional frameworks: detailed descriptions of skilled practice in one area, including what it feels like to do it well. Each framework has three to five key components and four levels of fluency, from Beginning to Exemplary. Teachers use it as a growth pathway.
Five frameworks from real schools
- A kindergarten explorations block
- Elementary guided mathematics
- Middle school science labs
- Behaviour support for paraprofessionals
- Zones of Regulation
